BONTOC- United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Philippines Country Representative Klaus Beck was impressed with the efforts of the trained health scouts or “little school nurses” from the elementary and high schools as partner of the health care providers in promoting a healthy environment.

During his visit to Mountain Province on November 12 – 13 2014, Klaus personally talked with the health scouts from Mountain Province General Comprehensive High School (MPGCHS) relative to their roles in their school.  The health scouts shared that they were trained in taking Blood Pressure (BP), rendering First- Aid and peer counselling to their schoolmates.

With this, Klaus encouraged the health scouts to continue their active participation in advocating a healthy environment in their school.

The official also assured the continuous support of the UNFPA as it continues to partner with Mountain Province and other provinces for the 7th Country Programme from 2012 to 2016.

Under the 7th Country Programme, UNFPA will provide catalytic support to places in selected geographic areas which have been identified based on local development context, political commitment, as well as the availability of relevant and strategic opportunities to deliver integrated support to communities.

In relation to this, Governor Leonard G. Mayaen shared the predicament of the Provincial Government on the delayed implementation of UNFPA funded projects despite updated submission of reports and liquidation of funds downloaded to the province.

With this, Mayaen hopes that the implementation of the new programme funded by the UNFPA will be fast-tracked.

The governor stressed that his concern is on the hastened implementation of the program as it will consequently be for the good of the constituents of the province who will be benefitting from the health services provided by the UNFPA.

Meanwhile, a program welcoming Klaus, UNFPA Assistant Country Representative Rena Dona, Area Program Officer Roxanne Gale Villaflor, Administrative Financial Assistant Jennylyn Babaran and other personnel of UNFPA was participated in by the department heads and employees of the Provincial Government of Mountain Province.

On the afternoon of the same date, Klaus visited the Rural Health Unit of Sabangan being accredited as a birthing facility.  The official commended the personnel of Sabangan RHU for readily providing health care services to its constituents.
